Although the Dodge WC-54 based on the standard 3/4 ton truck was the most common ambulance by far in use by US Army in 1944, any and all vehicles could have, and were used to transport stretcher cases and other wounded soldiers from forward aid stations to field hospitals. Jeeps, transport trucks and even half-tracks could be pressed into service as long as they were adorned with the International Red Cross insignia and were not armed.
